Sites to support research into the history of Malmesbury
Malmesbury is extremely fortunate to have the volunteer-run Athelstan Museum. Admission is free and the museum is open every day, in the Town Hall.
National oversight of listed buildings in England is the responsibility of Historic England. The advanced search function of the Historic England website allows you to identify every specific listed building in the Malmesbury area and find out more about its distinctive history.
For over fifty years the Civic Trust has been active in the protection of the historic and natural environment of the area. The Trust participates in planning discussions, produces publications and organises conservation activities.
The OPC project is an excellent county-wide initiative that is collecting together historical sources relating to every parish in Wiltshire. The Malmesbury page of the OPC website is developing all the time but already contains a fascinating array of Malmesbury sources.
The national records office for England is at Kew in London. It contains many important documents from the Malmesbury area. The TNA search engine includes both the collection at Kew and the catalogues from most local record offices.

Anyone interested in researching Malmesbury history should sooner or later visit the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. This is the county records office for the historic county of Wiltshire, situated in the centre of Chippenham.
