Lost Malmesbury

Although Malmesbury has much of its historic fabric still standing there are some structures or features that are no longer with us. The research below records what has been lost. Click the headings to download details.

The Black Horse Inn stood at the junction of the Malmesbury to Chippenham and Malmesbury to Swindon roads and was demolished in 1973.hed in 1973.

Malmesbury Branch Line opened in 1877 and closed in 1962

Malmesbury Railway station was demolished in 1963 after closure of the railway but you can still see where it stood today.

The Railway Inn (later The Flying Monk) was built in 1837 on the site of the current CO-OP on Gloucester Road it was demolished in 1984.

Malmesbury Union Workhouse was built in 1837-38(1) following the formation of Malmesbury Poor Union in 1835. It stood on Sherston Road on the site of what is now Bremilham Rise.

Manor House Burton Hill was later Malmesbury Community Hospital. Demolished and replaced by Malmesbury Primary Care Centre which opened 23rd June 2008.

The Priory was a three-storey brick built Victorian house situated in Burton Hill immediately south east of the junction of the Malmesbury to Swindon and the Malmesbury to Chippenham roads. It was built sometime after 1860 and demolished in 1973.
